Here is the famous quote.
“If only more people saw me, I would get more sales!”
As much as this is true, millions of people are fighting for the same keywords. So what makes Etsy decide that you should be chosen over someone else?
Unlike the hunger games, this is one time where we want “big brother” to select our name out of a hat! (or we want to volunteer as tribute)
To really understand how to hack the algorithm, we need to deep dive into Etsy's business plan.
How Etsy Works
Etsy is a business. They make money from shop owners.. But how?
ONLY WHEN SOMEONE BUYS.
This is important to note. They only make money when a sale takes place (think about how cheap it was to open your store).
So what does Etsy need to survive?
A store that makes sales. But here is the kicker. There is something called, in e-com style business, called a LTV.
This stands for Life Time Value of a customer.
This means if someone buys on Etsy, and has a great experience they are likely to come back and buy again. This is how Etsy will make money forever. If every person they get to become a buyer on Etsy continues to come back time and time again, they will have endless funds to market with.
So, I ask the question again, What is the most important part of Etsy’s business plan?
That people buy, AND have a great experience SO THAT they come back time and time again.
What this means for you.
You have to prove to Etsy that you are going to treat their customers like kings and queens. For this to work, you have to treat Etsy like a client. A very high-paying client.
So let's say a customer reaches out and asks if they can pay the domestic price for shipping to ship your product to the north pole.
Obviously, this is a dumb question. However, if you switch your mindset from just a random person on Etsy asking, to ETSY THEMSELVES asking you this question, the style in which you respond changes.
You wouldn’t respond in a few days with a simple response. You would see that Etsy is asking and probably respond quickly with details.
If you treat all your customers as if Etsy was the one buying from you, wouldn't that change the way ship or package? You would want to prove to Etsy that you're amazing so that they send you more customers!
What is the magic of the algorithm?
This is it! This is a secret step in landing on the first page of Etsy. Here is what this looks like in steps.
Respond to each conversation quickly with details with positive words.
Log into Etsy every day and do a once over on things
Favorite other stores and support other stores.
Offer quick shipping and ship on time.
Be quick to offer solutions to any hiccups between customers.
Don’t fight with customers. Be the first to offer money back
I know this may all sound basic, but Etsy has ALOT of data on how you are as a shop owner. Etsy doesn't want to send their customers to shops that have slow ship times or tend to argue with their people. Prove to Etsy that you will treat their customers well and you will see a trust from Etsy that will lead to more sales!
