Tell me if this sounds about right.. You google some random question and a 10-page article pops up with your answer. You quickly scroll till you see some keywords that match what you search, then you read a couple of sentences before exited the article with about 60% of your question answered.. Sounds about right?
This is because we are VERY selfish with our time online. We only care about ourselves. So when someone asks us to invest in their 10-page article, we try to find the quickest way to consume that article.
You may be doing this with my blog right now..
That's OK! I'm not offended! You are just like everyone else on the internet. You are looking for an answer. And as soon as you get it, your out.
So let me give you some advice when it comes to making videos for your audience.
You Got 3 seconds.
Yup. You got 3 seconds to catch someone's attention. Just 3. So don't spend that time introducing yourself or saying hello. Instead start with something that makes them committed to hear you.
Here is an example video that i made.
Did it work? Did you watch that whole video? If so, YES! I did it. What you may have not caught is it was in that first three seconds that you made the choice to watch.
Start your videos with a punch to lead them!
Set the pace.
So now that you know the start of your video is the most important part, let's talk about how to "pace."
The best way to win someones attention is to NOT make a fast pace start. Keep the camera angle the same and foreshadow what the video is going to be about. If a viewer doesn't know what they are watching or what they will gain from your video.. they are out.
So if it's supposed to be funny, show something funny. If its about your product, let them know. Let them make the choice to consume your video. The 3 seconds helps set that pace.
Be interesting.
This is obvious, but when creating videos you need to make sure that they are interesting. Does somebody really just want to see a video of your product? I find things like subtitles, or short clips (like the video seen above) really help pull users into the video (plus they can watch it sound off which is nice!)
Here is another video that helps show these principles all put together
You will notice:
A. A hook within the first 3 seconds.
B. A camera change after the first 3 seconds to keep interest.
C. A flow or pace that isnt too fast or too slow.
D. Clips that give the video life and keep surprising you.
