The Keyword Formula That Makes headlines convert on Etsy.

Here is the truth. We are human. So we think as a human does.

Etsy is not. This means that when we write our headlines for humans, Etsy doesn't understand them.

And if Etsy doesn't understand them, then humans never see them?

Following my weird Human vs Robot talk here?

Let's make this more simple.

Your pictures on Etsy for humans. They respond to things emotionally. They are drawn to pretty things and will take action based on what they see.

As for Etsy, they dont know how “pretty” or “emotionally moving” your picture is. So they don't know what you sell until you tell them.

(see where we are going?)

So if they can’t see your picture, how do you tell Etsy what you sell?

Through Keywords!

What are Keywords on Etsy?

Keywords are words that describe to Etsy what you sell. I like to break my keywords into two categories.

Main Keywords

Secondary Keywords.

Main keywords describe your target audience. So if you are trying to reach New moms or fashionable men or Animal lovers, you will want to put together a list of words used to describe those people. Those words will become your main keywords.

Secondary keywords describe the listing or product. Here is an example. If you sell baby clothes, then your target audience is new moms, or baby shower gifts, etc. These would be your main keywords for your shop. However, secondary keywords would describe the product. So Infant clothes, Newborn clothes, etc.

Once you have your main and secondary keywords it's time to put them in your shop.

Where Do I Put Keywords On Etsy?

Main Keywords should be put EVERYWHERE. I’m talking shop announcements, about sections, headlines, descriptions, keywords, etc. Anywhere Etsy lets you type!

The reason for this is that this allows you to tell Etsy what you sell. They send their little crawlers through your site and look for words that they see a lot so the more your keywords and spread throughout your shop, the better!

Secondary keywords should be in the titles of your listings, in the description of your listing, and in the keywords (tags) of your listing. By breaking it down this way, you are not only telling Etsy the type of store you are and who you target (through main keywords) but exactly what you sell (though secondary)

How to write headlines that convert

Now that you have your keywords, let's write a headline that converts!

We are going to take this headline from a real Etsy Shop

Little Moss Person | Magical Moon Forest Creature”

( do you see the issue with this headline? Without seeing a picture you wouldn't know what it was.. So Etsy doesn't know where to put it when people search)

And we are going to put it into our formula that will make this headline convert!

Here it is:

Secondary Keyword, Adjectives | Main Keyword/ Phrase | Secondary keyword/ Main Keywords

So let's rewrite this headline using this formula

The first thing we do is take a secondary keyword and add some adjectives.

Green Fairy Garden Troll For Fairy Gardens.

Now we add one of our main keywords from the shop.

Green Fairy Garden Troll For Fairy Gardens | Magic Handmade Nature Piece |

Ok, now we finish it off with more details emphasizing keywords, but also let the reader know more about the product.

Green Fairy Garden Troll For Fairy Gardens | Magic Handmade Nature Piece |Decorative Mossy Creature For Outdoor Space or Garden.

Now, we simply add these keywords from the headline into the description and tags and we will be seeing a HUGE increase of clicks coming to this shop!

This is something you will want to do with every listing on your shop. Make sure main keywords and secondary keywords are found throughout your shop!
